Sparrow's Song
A sparrow sings To lift the morning sun From its hollow Behind blue mountains In my blues pre-dawn Mindlessly shuffling Shoveling sustenance For socially necessary Surplus slavery A sudden sound! My senses spark! I rise! A sparrow sings Her melody unexpected Her rhythm unp redi ctab le Jazz A moment of bright clarity! My brain beams! I peak! A sparrow sings Unseen Outside my sill Her song arrives After a long journey Vibrating from generation To generation Through generations Her song is theirs Yet all her own Did Dolphy hear the same song? What did the soul of his sparrow sound? Where is her essence in his twists and bounds? Where will that song be One hundred years from now? Take solace: When our climate collapses Her aria will still sail Surfing the cosmos Alongside the flaps Of butterfly wings A sparrow sings Our consciousnesses connect Her eternal song Now eternally part of our own
